Supporters of a local cancer charity have helped raise enough funds to see the Urology Department at Leicester General Hospital transformed to allow patients and their families better access and ease when attending for their appointments and treatment.

The £12,000 donation from Birstall BAGS went towards the cost of a new interior design for the theatre waiting areas and refurbishment of the day room in the urology wards 28 and 29.

Birstall BAGS, a charity working in and around Birstall and Leicestershire, seeks to bring people together to raise funds to support cancer services used by the local community. The charity also takes every opportunity to raise the profile of cancer, particularly with regard to the signs and symptoms, recognising that early diagnosis of cancer really can save lives. Birstall BAGS works with other local charities to provide services that support members of the local community who are living with a diagnosis of cancer.

Liz Darlison, a trustee of the charity commented: “We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the donations that are coming in, and we’d like to congratulate our supporters for their efforts in fundraising and organising events that have allowed us to make such a significant donation to the urology department at Leicester General Hospital.

“Over the past year and more, we have all been touched by cancer whether it is a friend or family member or someone in the local community, and therefore Birstall BAGS will continue providing the support that is needed and generating funds to help local hospitals detect and treat cancers sooner,” Liz Darlison continued.

Birstall BAGS are currently raising additional funds for the gynaecology department at Leicester General Hospital to purchase hysteroscopes, which will help diagnose problems for women more quickly and comfortably, subsequently lessening their anxiety and allowing access to treatments more swiftly.
