26 teams of keen golfers hit the greens at Birstall Golf Club on Sunday June 25, 2017 to compete in the charity golf open, raising a total of £3,000 for local cancer charity, Birstall BAGS.

The annual event is very popular and the amount raised for the charity has increased each year for the last three years.

Birstall BAGS operates in and around Birstall and Leicestershire and seeks to bring people together to raise funds to support cancer services used by the local community. Birstall BAGS works with other local charities to provide services that support members of the local community who are living with a diagnosis of cancer.

Emma Shaw of Birstall BAGS commented: “We’re so grateful to Birstall Golf Club for letting us hold this event again. It was a great day and everyone really enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen. It raised a fantastic amount of money which will be spent supporting local people who are affected by cancer.”

John Clayton, who organises the annual event, said: “It was a brilliant day and I’m so pleased with the amount of money that was raised. I’d like to thank Nash from the City Rooms, Ray Wolfe, Jo Derry, the White Horse pub in Birstall, Beaumont Florist and the Celtic Manor and Forest of Arden golf resorts. They, and others, were all so generous with their prize donations. I’d also like to thank my wife Jo who was a massive help to me in organising the day.”

Gary Sykes, a member of the winning team, said: “It was a really wonderful day, well organised and all for a very worthy charity. I hope to be part of it again next year.”

Former captain of Birstall Golf Club, Dick Smith, also presented the charity with a cheque for £3,246 from funds raised last year while Birstall BAGS was the club’s nominated charity.
